Highlights - To All The Boys I've Loved Before

Wednesday 10 June 2015
I'll admit it - I'm a highlighter. In my eyes, there is no feeling more satisfying that when you highlight a quote in a book.

I might not be the most dedicated highlighter in the world - it's only done when I know that I've loved a book and it's a reread otherwise I use sticky notes - but it is something I feel passionate about. I love keeping tabs on my favourite quotes. Sometimes I don't have a pen and my quote book with me (in fact, I haven't updated my quote book since I spilled coffee all over it and had a mental breakdown for a few days) and I can sure as hell tell you now that I'm not taking the time to stop reading my book and search for the quote on Goodreads. No way. Not a chance. So that leaves highlighting. Rereading a book often means that I'll reread it again and again and again. Trust me when I tell you how interesting and nice it is to read a book and find quotes that you once connected so deeply with. It's a beautiful thing and I encourage you to do it - Unless, of course, you're against both highlighting and rereading which makes this a moot point.

It's going to be a long introduction before I get into the point of this post but I just want to explain the background of this to you. I read a hell of a lot in April and now I've tired myself out. I'm finding myself in the type of slump where there simply is just nothing you want to read - which can happen when you have a small TBR so naturally, I turned to rereading. The first book I thought of rereading was To All The Boys I've Loved Before. I was in the mood for a cute, fluffy and easy read but the sequel is being published at the end of May so I thought it was the perfect time to read it again and nothing has ever felt better. I always find it interesting to know what it is about a book that people fall in love with and which quotes they connect to the most: the sad ones, the happy ones or the hopeful ones. I'm a mixture of all three, I guess. As nosy as I am, I didn't think it was within my rights to deny another nosy person the chance to take a look into which quotes, for me, make up To All The Boys I've Loved Before. Here are the things that I highlighted and I hope you find it interesting.

I also wouldn't read these quotes if you haven't read the book yet and if you're planning to because these are practically the whole book. Oops.

Peter/Love/Relationships:

"I wonder what it's like to have that much power over a boy. I don't think I'd want it; it's a lot of responsibility to hold a person's heart in your hands" - Chapter 8, Page 47.

"Up close, your face wasn't so much handsome as beautiful" - Chapter 16, Page 83.

"Plenty of people are good-looking. That doesn't make them interesting or intriguing or cool" - Chapter 16, Page 86.

"Peter smiles, and ugh, it's annoying how handsome he is" - Chapter 25, Page 142.

"Margot would say she belongs to herself. Kitty would say she belongs to no one. And I guess I would say I belong to my sisters and my dad, but that won't always be true. To belong to someone - I didn't know it, but now that I think about it, it seems like that's all I've ever wanted. To really be somebody's , and to have them be mine" - Chapter 38, Page 227.

"I roll my eyes at the window. Peter's so Peter" - Chapter 39, Page 242.

"I smile, because it's so cute. And for a second, just for a second, I forget. I forget that this isn't real" - Chapter 46, Page 288.

"He...he looks at you a lot, Lara Jean. When you're not paying attention. He looks at you, to see if you're having a good time" - Chapter 48, Page 300.

"Peter Kavinsky just kissed me. He kissed me, and I liked it. I'm pretty sure I liked it. I'm pretty sure I like him" - Chapter 49, Page 306.

"But I don't want him. I want someone else. It feels strange to have spent so much time wishing for something, for someone, and then one day, suddenly, to just stop" - Chapter 55, Page 339.

"When he sees me, he smiles" - Chapter 56, Page 340.

"Why is it so hard to say no to him? Is this what it's like to be in love with somebody?" - Chapter 56, Page 342.

"I think I started liking you" - Chapter 62, Page 369.

"I want to say yes, but I don't want to be with a boy whose heart belongs to somebody else. Just once, I want to be some one else's first choice" - Chapter 62, Page 370.

"You only like guys you don't have a shot with, because you're scared. What are you so scared of?" - Chapter 62, Page 371.

"You'd rather make up a fantasy version of somebody in your head than be with a real person" - Chapter 62, Page 371.

"His pupils are dilated he's looking at me so hard. He's staring at me like he's never seen me before" - Chapter 63, Page 375.

"I kiss him one more time and I feel like I'm flying" - Chapter 63, Page 377.

"Around 3 a.m. I throw away Peter's notes. I delete the picture of him from my phone; I delete his number. I think that if I just delete him enough, it will be like none of it ever happened and my heart won't hurt so badly" - Chapter 66, Page 391.

"Peter Kavinsky" - Chapter 68, Page 398.

"Peter. Despite everything, Peter" - Chapter 71, Page 414.

"I've never gotten a love letter before. But reading these notes like this, one after the other, it feels like I have. It's like...it's like there's only ever been Peter. Like everyone else that came before him, they were all to prepare me for this" - Chapter 72, Page 419.

"Love is scary: it changes; it can go away. That's part of the risk. I don't want to be scared any more" - Chapter 72, Page 420.

"I get out my special flowy pen and my good thick stationary, and I start to write. Not a goodbye letter. Just a plain old love letter. Dear Peter..." - Chapter 72, Page 421.

Family:

"But it's like trying to hold on to a fistful of sand: all the little bits slip out of your hands, and then you're just clutching air and grit" - Chapter 59, Page 351.

"Sister's are supposed to fight and make up, because they are sisters and sisters always find their way back to each other" - Chapter 69, Page 405.

"There is a specific kind of fight you can only have with your sister. It's the kind where you say things you can't take back. You say them because you can't help but say them, because you're so angry it's coming up in your throat and out your eyes; you're so angry you can't see straight. All you see is blood" - Chapter 70, Page 408.

Life:

"It's funny how much of childhood is about proximity" - Chapter 8, Page 47.

"Firsts are best because they are beginnings" - Chapter 15, Page 77.

"feeling like I belong" - Chapter 36, Page 205.

"Do you think there's a difference? Between belonging with and belong to, I mean?" - Chapter 38, Page 228.

"How am I supposed to know what's real and what's not? It feels like I'm the only one who doesn't know the difference" -  Chapter 49, Page 307.

"You've just gotta hold your head up and act like you don't give a shit" - Chapter 65, Page 386.

"I don't have to be so afraid of goodbye, because goodbye doesn't have to be forever" - Chapter 72, Page 421.

    1. I use tabs a lot! I only highlight on rereads because I know then that I love the book a lot and will probably read it over and over. Otherwise tabs will do ;)

  2. i dont know if i could ever highlight... like im not someone whos particularly neurotic about books but something about highlighting just makes me think SCHOOL. plus they often bleed onto pages and plus they usually come in ew colours like bright yellow. but anyway. i am planning on rereading tatbilb soon - one of the reasons why i havent finished psisly yet - so these quotes are perfect to get myself hyped up about it. 3. Ahh that's a lot of quotes! I've only ever highlighted in my book ONCE (and will never do it again), but sometimes I use sticky notes! I've never marked as many quotes as these, though! xD I see you highlighted some quotes that were sort of like stepping stones in the book (or lines that lead to important scenes), so I guess that's why. Normally I only highlight quotes I can relate to or are helpful life tips. ;)

    1. I use sticky notes too! they get expensive though so if I know i've already loved the book (and read it before I went through sticky notes) then I like to highlight and even then it's only with special books.

HA! I'M SO WEAK. I JUST HIGHLIGHT ANYTHING THAT MAKES ME GIGGLE OR SQUEAL OR CRY.

  4. I wish it said who in the book said what. Other wise, a great source!
