Things That Make My Feminist Heart Beat A Little Faster.

Saturday, 21 March 2015
I am a huge feminist. I think at this point, that shouldn't even come as a surprise. For the past few weeks I've seen people posting about their favourite Heroines and I wanted to join in but I decided to put a little spin on it and instead give you some things that make me, as a feminist, very happy. I would go on to talk about my opinions on the topic in more detail but we don't have that much time in the world and I'm not the most literate or concise person out there so I'll hand you over to my friend Georgia who wrote this wonderful post and I am going to agree with her and say Yes! Let's commercialise Feminism.

Taylor Swift -
Okay, so Taylor admitting that she is a feminist is a fairly new thing, but that doesn't stop her from being a an incredible woman who is at the top of her game right now. 1989 opened up a whole new world and Taylor is ALL ABOUT THE GIRL POWER. One of my favourite things about feminism is how it brings women together and seeing Taylor hanging with all of her friends who are all strong females in their own rights fills me with an irreplaceable joy. Not to mention that she is graceful in her music and doesn't write songs that describe the complete opposite of feminism and pass it off as a 'girl power' song. Taylor is all about doing what makes YOU happy and I don't know a single reason why someone wouldn't show her the respect she deserves.

"I didn’t realize that being in love with your life can be just as wonderful as being in love with another person. Every relationship takes work and effort, and when I put that work and effort into my friends, family, and fans… my life changed completely. I started making choices based on what I wanted, and didn’t feel like I needed to justify them. If I wanted to cut my hair, I did it. If I wanted to move to New York, I did it. If I wanted to take a spontaneous road trip, I did it. At 24 I decided that my life is enough for me, and I stopped looking for some other piece to complete it. I also learned how to needlepoint ironic cross-stitches of rap lyrics and gave them to my friends as presents. I’ll let you decide which is the more important revelation."

Feminist Apparel -
This is a shop that I love to go onto and never buy anything from (It's too far out of my price range and a girl has books to buy). My favourites are the 'Cats Against Catcalls' and well the rest of them. All of the designs are super cute but they could also have a huge impact.

The 100 -
This is a TV show that breaks most of the gender stereotypes that I've ever heard. Males are strong and vulnerable, Women are vulnerable and strong. In fact, most of the women in this show are in positions of leadership and it's not even an issue, like, at all. The males of the show don't care that women are strong and powerful and capable of tearing an entire city down if it means that they get to save the people they love, they don't even bat an eyelid and that is possibly my favourite thing in the world. If a society that has survived a nuclear apocolypse, re-habitated a radiation ridden world and come face to face with a man-eating Gorilla can live without the patriarchy, I'm pretty sure we can too.

Mean Girls -
This is a movie passed off as a funny 'chick-flick' movie not to be taken seriously, but don't be fooled, Mean Girls is feminist heaven. It is, at heart, a film about girl-love which is an issue very important and close to my heart. If girls can't love each other, and show each other the respect that we deserve, then how can we expect others to do the same? If we run around and call each other 'sluts' then that gives men (and others) the excuse that it's okay to call us sluts. There are two important quotes in Mean Girls that I will defend til' the end of my days: "You have all got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it okay for guys to call you sluts and whores" and "Calling somebody else fat won't make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn't make you any smarter. All you can do in life is try to face the problem in front of you". If you need any more reasons to love Mean Girls here is a whole list of them.

Laverne Cox -
Laverne Cox is an incredible, revolutionary, talented, black transwoman who identifies as a feminist AND speaks out in interviews and elsewhere about feminism. There is just something about her that makes my heart flutter. The world needs more people like Laverne Cox. If you don't know who this woman is or if you haven't read/seen any articles on her then here are some ones that I think you need to read. 'I Absolutely Consider Myself A Feminist', Speaking out about Transphobia and Discussing Passing Privilege.

  2. Those t-shirts are great! The cat one is effective and adorable at the same time. I never thought about Mean Girl that way, because the messages always seem a bit.. subtle, but you are so right.

  4. yes @ mean girls and laverne cox and TAYLOR SWIFT. honestly i love this new era. she's just so kicking ass all the time. i love that. and i love that she was honest about her past bc better than revenge was a very poor song in terms of its message but i love how she was so honest about that and was like yeah you know i didn't really understand what feminism was then but now i know and i think it's great. like yessss amazing. i get that not everyone totally understands what feminism is and thats okay. it only makes me upset when people just try to pass off their misunderstandings as reality and dont even make an effort to look into any further. if anything this just shows taylors growth as an individual and thats something that sets a really good example especially for her younger fans.

but like when i hear celebrities (or really anyone) say they arent feminists that really bugs me. like i can understand why you might think that it's women against men bc of the way its been portrayed but honestly you should really take the time and research it further bc its not about that at all. it's about gender equality so how can you say you're not in support of that?

which is why when i see celebrities saying im not a feminist bc i feel like that has negative connotations and/or is very anit-men i'm just like EYEROLL. why dont you spend some time and actually learn what it is? like i try not to judge people for their opinions but if youre going to say youre not a feminist and dont believe in it it's going to be hard for you to really make your case for me. like sure if you dont like that label dont use it but would you at least find out what it is?? like i'm sure shailene woodley is a fine person and probably really sweet but her quotes on feminism are absolutely ridiculous. honestly her quotes didnt make any sense to me at all. http://www.salon.com/2014/06/03/shailene_woodley_still_thinks_feminism_discriminates/

like hey shailene i like men too (um have you seen dylan o brien??) but calling myself a feminist doesnt mean i hate them.

ok but anyway thats my little rant. i mean i guess its your prerogative to not call yourself a feminist but at least get to know what feminism is? like its not about hating men. its not discriminatory. and if you get that and you still dont want to be a feminist bc you hate labels or whatever fine but dont tell me youre not a feminist and then give me reasons that is exactly what feminism ISNT about.
